This version uses one exhaust port per head, a cable throttle, variable intake geometry, cast aluminum intake manifold, and has a 6500 rpm rev limit. It was only available with an automatic transmission. Found in the 2000–2002 Outback H6, Legacy GT30 and Legacy Lancaster 6.
EZ30 was introduced in 1999 in the Japanese market, in the Subaru Outback, and in 2000 in the United States market. It is a flat-six, 24-valve, quad cam motor with an aluminium block and heads. All use dual timing chains and coil-on-plug ignition. Interestingly, minimising the distance between cylinders and switching from a belt to a chain cam drive helped Subaru reduce the length of the six-pot engine – it’s just 20mm longer than the EJ-series four cylinder! Again, the EZ30 uses DOHC, multi-valve breathing and a variable induction system. With a compression ratio elevated to 10.7:1 (requiring the use of premium unleaded fuel), the EZ30 outputs 162kW at 6000 rpm and 289Nm at 4400 rpm. A four-speed auto comes standard – with trademark Subaru AWD, of course. Possibly 75 pounds heavier than EJ. 2 and a half inches longer.
